Predictive intelligence for Porsche Formula E racing
Artifical Intelligence, Motorsports
Background
In 2019, Porsche Motorsports announced its foray into the Formula E (Electric) racing series with the aim of boosting sales for their upcoming consumer electric vehicles, such as the Taycan. Formula E is a high-speed, thrilling sport that demands extensive real-time data analysis to aid drivers. Supporting each of Porsche's racecar drivers were teams comprising 15 race engineers and data analysts, who provided guidance via radio on energy consumption and racing tactics. Seeking a competitive advantage, Porsche engaged data scientists, data engineers, software developers, and our engineers to develop a web application capable of assisting race engineers in formulating optimal strategies for their drivers.
What we did
We created an interactive web app for an elite Formula-E motorsports team to make key strategic decisions, optimize energy usage, and predict race outcomes. This product enabled Porsche's Formula-E racing team analyze live racing data and predict race outcomes, which resulted in an 8% improvement in their racing performance. We met regularly at Porsche's top secret headquarters in Stuttgart to observe their existing racing simulators and meet the team to provide weekly updates on the design and development progress, seeking input from them regularly and performing usability testing before we handed off the app.
Results
We helped Porsche to launch their successful 2020 Formula E debut. 100% of users reported an improvement in decisions made during a racing session, which in turn led to an 8% reduction in race time compared to no AI-enhanced strategy.
